Walk to Teach Stranger Danger

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE AT YOUNG AGE

It was a sea of red at last year’s Walk for Daniel on the Hervey Bay Esplanade. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 1000 people.

This news was posted recently by Fraser Coast Chronicle on 28th August, 2012.

DENISE and Bruce Morcombe will be among a crowd that will march from Seafront Oval later this month in honour of their murdered son Daniel and to educate Fraser Coast children about stranger danger.

Organiser Jodie Tangikara said more than 1000 people were expected to attend the 2012 Walk for Daniel on September 22.

The all-day event will start at 10am and this year include jumping castles, arts and craft stalls, face painting and rides donated by local businesses.

Urangan Point Primary School will also host a charity barbecue.

Proceeds from the event, now in its second year, will go to the Daniel Morcombe foundation.

The foundation's aims are to educate children about personal safety and abduction and to assist victims of crimes involving children.

Ms Tangikara said she had been organising the event since the start of the year, when she first met with the Morcombes.

It has now been more than eight years since Daniel Morcombe disappeared from a Sunshine Coast bus stop.

A man was charged with his murder last August.

People taking part in the Hervey Bay Walk for Daniel have been asked to wear red, the same colour shirt worn by Daniel on the day he disappeared and the chosen colour of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Visit DanielMorcombeFoundation-Website for more information on the foundation.

Morcombes Seek Right to Farewell

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE AT SCHOOL

This News was on 21st August 2012. It was posted by Sunshine Coast Daily.

TODAY marks one year since the Morcombes knew their little boy was gone forever.

Though it had been almost eight years - 2790 days - since Daniel went missing while waiting for a bus on Nambour Connection Rd, his parents Bruce and Denise still held a sliver of hope he was out there somewhere, alive.

But in an emotional rollercoaster, from listening to persons of interest at an inquest to the arrest of Daniel's alleged murderer, last year would be the year their worst fear was confirmed.

The Morcombes called last night for new laws to give families of murder victims the right to say goodbye in "a dignified and timely manner".

They posted a photo online showing the flowers, prayer card, rosary beads, necklace and lit candle they and Daniel's brothers left after a private prayer service at Glasshouse Mountains, where his remains were unearthed one year ago.

It was a significant breakthrough and they remain grateful to the searchers but, for them, little has changed. They still do not have their boy back.

"We draw no comfort from that discovery, because to us, it feels like he was immediately abducted a second time," they said.

"A further 366 days have elapsed and there is no end in sight.

"This is the cruellest twist in a nightmare which began almost nine years ago.

"It is inhuman to treat Daniel's remains simply as evidence for a trial.

"Surely modern forensic science, and in particular DNA testing in this day and age can demonstrate beyond dispute the legal question of identification.

"It seems the opposite is true and now we are trapped, surrounded with endless questions and uncertainty, delays, more tests, it just goes on and on."

Daniel Morcombe's Memory Drives Child-Safety Crusade

School beat: Bruce and Denise Morcombe are joined by Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School pupils Eva Bluett, Elise Wheeler, Scott Choe and Brody Lee yesterday (20th August 2012)

This news was on 21st August 2012. It was posted by Cairns.

CHILD safety advocates Bruce and Denise Morcombe have brought their message back to the Far North, marking one year since their son Daniel's remains were recovered.

The Morcombes arrived in Cairns on Sunday to continue their “Recognise, React and Report” tour through Queensland primary schools.

During an interactive 45-minute presentation at Earlville’s Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School yesterday, students were taught how to ward off approaches by strangers.

Students were also told to trust their instincts and learn how to detect early warning signs.

With today marking 12 months since search crews found the 13-year-old’s remains in bushland on the Sunshine Coast, Mr Morcombe said it was difficult reliving the circumstances of his son’s disappearance. “It is difficult to talk about Daniel and that side of it, but it helps the message get through to the kids,” Mr Morcombe said.

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE WITH HIS TWIN, BRADLEY, WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG

“It doesn’t matter what school we are at, the kids are always attentive and we can offer something unique through linking the message to Daniel.”
Mr Morcombe said the family was still waiting for Daniel’s remains to be released so they could hold a proper funeral.

“Every day we hope to get the call,” he said.

Deputy principal Glen Bucklar said the visit was important for the students, who were familiar with Daniel’s story.

“Their personal story adds to the child safety lessons the students learn in class,” he said. “I’m sure they all take something out of it and respond in their own way.”

The Morcombes will visit St Augustine’s School at Mossman today, before moving on to Cooktown, Ravenshoe and Mt Isa.

“It’s pretty constant; we’ve been to 124 schools since last September and we’ll be doing that many again,” Mrs Morcombe said.

Voice Star Kelsie Rimmer to Sing for Daniel Morcombe at Family Day Out - Keeping Kids Safe, Caloundra

KELSIE RIMMER

I found the news on Herald Sun. It was posted recently by them on, 22nd August, 2012.

THE Voice contestant Kelsie Rimmer will headline the Daniel Morcombe Foundation's latest child-safety initiative.

The 20-year-old singer/songwriter from the Sunshine Coast will take centre stage at Family Day Out - Keeping Kids Safe, at Kings Beach in Caloundra on October 1.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe officially launched the event at the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter hangar at Marcoola on Wednesday.

The child safety crusaders said they wanted to build the new event into the most educational and entertaining child protection and harm prevention awareness day in Australia.

Mr Morcombe said they had taken advantage of the new Queen's Birthday public holiday in Queensland to launch Family Day Out.

"This is another proactive way that the foundation can directly impact and give back to people in the community who continue to support us," he said.

"The day is about a whole host of organisations and authorities right across the child and family sector coming together to make a real community connection and offer information and assistance where necessary.

"We're going to do it in a fun and relaxed way that can be enjoyed by the whole family."

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

The live entertainment lineup will include the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra, ET Circus, JEKKS and the Priests of Heka, Cassie Hilbers, McKenzie Comer, Afterglow, Sam and Tim Aitken, QLD Police Pipes Band and Jally Productions.

Daniel's older brother Dean, who plays bass guitarist, will also perform with his band Holistic.

Dozens of exhibitors will offer have displays offering information and assistance.

Activities such as long board skateboarding, beach activities, arts and crafts and a children's animal farm will mask an educational message at the free event.

"It will be entertainment with a purpose to make sure kids are always thinking about their safety and how to protect themselves," Mr Morcombe said.

Event organiser Tracey McAsey said they hoped the Family Day Out would attract a crowd of at least 5000 in its first year.

CEO David Donaldson said AGL crews would make two appearances on the day to demonstrate the life saving water rescue techniques.

"In the past six months alone we have winched children from roofs and vehicles trapped by flood, airlifted children suffering meningitis and other potentially fatal illnesses, come to the rescue of families involved in motor vehicle accidents, transferred premature and unwell babies with the support of a specialist paediatric doctor and nurse and aided youngsters injured in falls, near drowning, pedestrian accidents and the like," he said.

Family Day Out is the latest child safety project for the Morcombes and comes after they launched a child safety app, HELP ME, through iTunes in March.

While the day will have a focus on child safety, it will certainly not be limited to this area.

“While the DMF has an emphasis on personal and cyber safety plus supporting child victims of crime, we totally understand that there are many other organisations out there that support the family unit and we wanted to bring them all together in one place to make them more accessible,” added Denise Morcombe.

Local surf identities Rebecca Creedy, current Australian Iron Woman Champion and Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girl Entrant Apryl Cordingley will also be onhand this Wednesday to help kickstart the event.

And to add icing to the cake, another great community player has come onboard as a major supporter. The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter will make an appearance twice during the day, offering the public the chance to view a water winch demonstration and basket rescue, skills the rescue operation would typically use when people are in distress at sea.

“This is what the day is all about, community stakeholders coming together to assist our children and families from a wide range of backgrounds. We couldn’t be prouder to be associated and work with the likes of the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter and all the other organisations who will be participating on the day,” finished Bruce Morcombe.

The day is planned to be an annual event on the local community calendar with the potential to grow the ‘Education through Entertainment’ event platform to other areas across Australia, as an effective cut-through means to deliver key messages and information that empowers children, parents and families.

Media opportunities for interviews and vision will be available at 9am Wednesday 22nd August at the AGL Action Rescue Headquarters at the Sunshine Coast Airport. Please ensure to bring photo identification for airside access to be conducted at 8.45am for 9am start.

Morcombes Apply for Release of Remains

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

This news was on 21st August 2012. It was posted recently by TheAustralian.

THE family of teenager Daniel Morcombe has applied to the Queensland coroner for the release of his remains so he can finally be laid to rest.

Daniel's remains were discovered a year ago on Tuesday in bushland on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, almost eight years after he disappeared while waiting for a bus in December 2003.

Perth man Brett Peter Cowan, 42, has been charged with murdering the 13-year-old.

Lawyer Peter Boyce on Tuesday said he'd applied to the coroner for the release of Daniel's remains and said the wait had been excruciating for his parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe.

"I haven't seen anyone involved in such a lengthy and delayed process, but there are reasons in this case, largely because of the extent of DNA testing that they did," Mr Boyce told ABC radio.

"It's really a matter now for the decision to be made and that's why the application's been made to the coroner to ask for the release of Daniel's remains."

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

The Morcombe family on Monday turned to Facebook to express their anguish over the delay, saying it felt like Daniel had "been abducted a second time".

"It is inhuman to treat Daniel's remains simply as evidence for a trial," they wrote.

"Reasonable timeframes must be written into state law allowing the forgotten victim's family the right to say goodbye," they said.

"It just goes on and on': Morcombes' Wait Continues

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

This news was on 21st August 2012. It was out recently by Brisbane Times.

It has been 12 months today since Bruce and Denise Morcombe received the phone call they had been waiting nearly eight years for.

After Queensland’s biggest police investigation in history, searchers had found the remains of their 13-year-old son, Daniel, in the Glasshouse Mountains near the Sunshine Coast.
It is inhuman to treat Daniel’s remains simply as evidence for a trial

But one year on, the Morcombes are still waiting to bury their son and they have made an impassioned plea to have his remains released so they can bury him.

Daniel’s remains are still undergoing forensic testing ahead of court proceedings for his accused murderer, Brett Peter Cowan.

The Morcombes have released a statement calling for changes to Queensland law to ensure the remains of victims are returned to their grieving families for burial as quickly as possible.

"The 'system' continues to violate Daniel even after his passing, but we will not let the next unfortunate family suffer as we have," their statement said.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe reflect on the one-year anniversary of their son's remains being discovered.

"Everyone would agree that as a developed ethical society we can do better going forward. Reasonable time frames must be written into state law allowing the forgotten victim's family the right to say 'goodbye' in a dignified and timely manner."

The Morcombes said the continual delay in Daniel’s funeral had added to their grief and called for an end to the forensic testing.

"It is inhuman to treat Daniel’s remains simply as evidence for a trial," the statement said.
"Surely modern forensic science, and in particular DNA testing, in this day and age, can demonstrate beyond dispute, the legal question of identification.

"Isn’t that what we have been led to believe?
"It seems the opposite is true and now we are trapped, surrounded with endless questions and uncertainty, delays, and more tests. It just goes on and on."
Daniel went missing while waiting for a bus on Nambour Connection Road at Woombye on December 7, 2003.

He had been heading to a shopping centre to buy Christmas gifts for his family.
His parents and brothers held a private memorial on the land where Daniel had been buried.
They left flowers and rosary beads. But the family are still unable to mark a final resting place.

"We draw no comfort from that discovery, because to us, it feels like he was immediately abducted a second time,” Mr Morcombe said, adding that he and his family were "very grateful" to the searchers.

"A further 366 days have elapsed and there is no end in sight. This is the cruellest twist in a nightmare which began almost nine years ago."

"For now we must wait ... and wait some more."

Morcombes Beg for End to Nightmare and Daniel's remains to be Released for Burial

DANIEL'S PARENTS, BRUCE AND DENISE MORCOMBE

This news was on 21st August, 2012. It was posted recently by DailyTelegraph.

THE parents of Daniel Morcombe have made a desperate plea to the State Coroner to release their son's remains a year after they were found.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe have asked State Coroner Michael Barnes to end the "cruellest twist in a nightmare which began almost nine years ago" when their 13-year-old son was abducted.

Mr Morcombe said they had experienced what felt like a "second abduction".

"To have come so far and have what we thought was an opportunity to say goodbye late last year denied, denied, denied," he said. "I want the police, the coroner, the Director of Public Prosecutions or somebody to stand up and say 'that's not right'.

"The system continues to violate Daniel even after his passing, but we will not let the next unfortunate family suffer as we have. Reasonable timeframes must be written into state law allowing the forgotten victim's family the right to say goodbye in a dignified and timely manner."

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

The Morcombes' lawyer Peter Boyce, of Butler McDermott Lawyers, filed the formal application on the couple's behalf.

Daniel, 13, vanished in 2003 as he waited for a bus at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast.

A government spokesman has said his remains could be released to the family once the defence team has either accepted test results or conducted its own tests.

Defence lawyer Tim Meehan, of Bosscher Lawyers, representing the man accused of killing the teenager, last night confirmed his team would have its own DNA tests performed. "At this stage we're not in a position to provide any timeframes ... because we're consulting with our experts," Mr Meehan said.

Brett Peter Cowan is due in court for a mention on September 5.

Daniel Morcombe's Siena Catholic College Classmate Scott Balkin Welcomes Arrest of Suspect

The photo above is the photo of Daniel's class in 2003

This news was in August 21, 2011.

THEY were two little lads, drawn together as mates because they could see eye to eye.

Scott Balkin regarded Daniel Morcombe as his best friend. They were in the same Year 9 class at Siena Catholic College in 2003 and shared some subjects.

The day before Daniel went missing, they were playing video games at Scott's Caloundra home on the Sunshine Coast and went to a movie.

They shared big plans for the summer - riding horses and motocross bikes at the Morcombes' and more video games at the Balkins'.

Daniel invited Scott to go shopping the next day, Sunday, at the Sunshine Plaza but he couldn't make it.

That was the day the 13-year-old was allegedly snatched from a bus stop at Woombye in December 2003.

Almost eight years after Daniel's disappearance, Mr Balkin, now 22, says he is searching for closure.

Scott Balkin on his 21st Birthday

Now living in Alberta, Canada, where he works as an apprentice chef, he said the recent arrest of a suspect and the earnest hunt for Daniel's remains was welcome.

"It's good, I'm glad, it will give everyone closure after seven years," Mr Balkin said last week.

"It's good that it has finally happened and everyone can kind of deal with it and in a way put it behind them."

The story of Daniel's classmates, their private grief and emotional strain has been seldom told.

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE ON HIS SCHOOL UNIFORM

They were the class of 2006, who graduated from Siena Catholic College without one of their own.

Daniel, a keen student, should have been there.

"I was glad to graduate because, finally, I'd finished school," Mr Balkin said. "But there was a big hole because Daniel should have been a graduation student.

"He would have gone to uni because he was smart and he would have done well."

Five years after graduation, many former classmates remain bonded by Daniel. Scattered across the country and around the world , they keep in touch on Facebook.

Anika Hume, now a journalist in regional NSW, was in Daniel's group of Year 9 friends.

"It unites us, no matter where we are, no matter how far you move, it's something that bonds our grade together," Ms Hume said.

"It still affects us. I live 14 hours away and it still affects me."

At age 19, Mr Balkin tattooed his left arm with the Daniel Morcombe red ribbon.

"I don't want to forget him because he was such a great guy - he was a great student and wonderful friend, but at the same time you don't want to bring up the bad feelings," he said.

Witness Tells Inquiry She Saw Daniel Morcombe, heard Cries for Help

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE, WAVING HAPPILY

This News was on 15th December, 2010

A MOTHER saw Daniel Morcombe standing at a bus stop about the time of his disappearance and then heard the urgent screams of a child in distress while driving to collect her daughter from church, an inquest has been told.

Judith Van Der Meer told the Brisbane Coroner's Court she remembered seeing Daniel, a blue car and two men acting "conspicuously" under the Kiel Mountain Rd overpass about the time of his disappearance of December 7, 2003.

Ms Van Der Meer, who was running late to collect her young daughter from the nearby Christian Outreach Church, said after passing Danile she heard a child's voice yelling.

"It was definitely Daniel there with a stick (and then) I remember hearing a boy's voice saying, 'No, I don't want to,' " she said.

"It was short, it was sharp, it was urgent."

However, the mother-of-the-three said after collecting her daughter from church she "didn't think anything more of it".

SCENE OF THE CRIME: The photo above shows where Daniel disappeared

Ms Van Der Meer said she also heard the distinct voices of two men, who could have been those she had seen standing near a blue car near where she had seen Daniel standing and holding a stick."

Chief coroner Michael Barnes was told the woman was also suspicious of a man, who she thought looked like a "murderer", who attended at least three services at her church and spent time congregating with young children.

"There was something that made me quite uncomfortable about him," Ms Van Der Meer said.

She said she saw the same man walking up an embankment near the Woombye bus-stop Daniel as last seen at prior to his suspected abduction.

Under questioning by solicitor Peter Boyce, for the Morcombe family, said her recollection of the events did not come back to her until she was relaxing while on a camping holiday a week or two later.

"When I had time to relax it (memories of that day) started coming to me and was getting clearer and clearer," she said.

"It was like two o'clock in the morning, and, oh my gosh my memory just kicked in."

The hearing continues.

Man Charged with Daniel Morcombe's murder

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

This News was on 13th August, 2012.

The parents of missing Queensland teenager Daniel Morcombe say they are finding it unbearably tough to come to terms with their son's fate.

Police on Saturday charged a 41-year-old man with the teen's murder, nearly eight years after Daniel, who was 13, went missing while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

"It's a tough gig," Daniel's father, Bruce Morcombe told Seven News on Saturday night.

Mr Morcombe said the arrest, which occurred earlier on Saturday night, came after "almost eight years of relentless searching" and that the family remained hopeful Daniel's body would be found.

"We've still got some work of ahead of us, but with any luck we'll find Danny, wherever he may be," he said.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson paid tribute to the Morcombe family, saying they showed "courage, patience and resolve" during what was the largest missing person investigation in the history of the Queensland Police Service.

Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett said the arrest underpinned the "dedication, tenacity and professionalism" of the officers who had worked on the lengthy investigation.

"This is obviously a very significant milestone in what has been a complex and protracted investigation," Dep Comm Barnett told a media conference in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Police said they would be searching an area of bushland on the Sunshine Coast but would not comment further on the investigation, because the matter is now before the court.

The man, who will remain in police custody until his court appearance in Brisbane Magistrate's Court on Monday, has been charged with murder, deprivation of liberty, child stealing, indecent treatment of a child and interfering with a corpse.

Daniel disappeared from an unofficial bus stop under an overpass in the Woombye district of the Sunshine Coast, on Dec 7, 2003.

He had intended to catch the 1.35pm bus to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre to buy Christmas presents for his family but he failed to return.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing him around 2pm on the Nambour-Connection Road under the overpass.

The bus he was supposed to catch had broken down a short distance from his stop, and was running behind schedule.

A replacement bus was sent out, but it didn't stop to pick the boy up, although the bus driver radioed his depot for another bus to collect Daniel.

When the second bus came a short time later, Daniel had disappeared.

More Human Remains Found at Daniel Morcombe Search Site

This news was in 5th September, 2011.

Further human remains have been found at the same place where three bones belonging to Daniel Morcombe were uncovered in Sunshine Coast bushland last month, police have confirmed.

Police said the remains had been found over the past week at the primary search site in Beerwah.
"The remains, which were located in the primary search site off Kings Road, will be forensically analysed," police said in a statement issued this morning.

MORCOMBES TAKE MESSAGE TO SCHOOLS
Daniel Morcombe's parents commence their child safety tour of Queensland schools.

"The Morcombe family has been kept regularly advised of any developments throughout the search.’’

On August 13 authorities launched an intense search of bushland at Beerwah about 40 kilometres from Woombye.

The three bones were found on August 21, days after a pair of shoes were found at the site.
One week later, DNA analysis confirmed the bones belonged to Daniel. Forensic testing of the shoes - the same brand worn by Daniel when he disappeared - is still underway.
Police said from now on the media would be provided with search updates on a weekly, rather than a daily, basis.

But police would not disclose how many bones have been found, following discussions with the Morcombe family.

Daniel was last seen waiting for a bus under an overpass on Nambour Connection Road at Woombye on December 7, 2003 - just 12 days short of his 14th birthday.

Mr Morcombe told media last week, the DNA confirmation had "traumatised" the family, but also brought some relief.

"It’s a place you don’t want to be but is a relief that perhaps we are at the final chapter," he said.
"It was like waiting for the sledgehammer to hit you, and when it does come it’s still a shock.’’
Mrs Morcombe said the family was determined to give Daniel a proper funeral.

"All of Daniel’s remains have to be found and then we can start planning a funeral," she said.
Mr and Mrs Morcombe are currently on a week-long safety tour of Queensland schools.
The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Program will be taught in schools in honour of Daniel, and his parents have become paid child safety ambassadors to deliver the message.
The Morcombes’ message will include that children always remove themselves from uncomfortable situations, that they bond with "trusted adults" to whom they can tell anything, and that they be wary in their use of computers and mobile phones.

The search of the Beerwah site continues today, police said.
Brett Peter Cowan, 42, has been charged with Daniel’s alleged abduction and murder.

Daniel Morcombe - The Impact

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE WITH HIS CAT

The Morcombe family started the "Daniel Morcombe Foundation", and has put its resources into keeping Morcombe's disappearance in the public eye and trying to find out what happened to their son. The foundation is committed to educating children about personal safety and to raising awareness throughout Australia of the dangers of predatory criminals. These efforts are supported by the Australian media, especially on each anniversary of Daniel's disappearance when a "Day for Daniel" is held to promote awareness of the vulnerability of children.

An accompanying event is the "Ride for Daniel", which covers 50 km of the Sunshine Coast, held each year since 2005.

Daniel's murder was the focus of the Crime Investigation Australia Season 1 episode "Tears for Daniel"

Daniel Morcombe - The Murder Charge

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE WITH A HORSE

On 13 August 2011, a Perth man was taken into custody and charged with Daniel's murder and other offences, including child stealing, deprivation of liberty, indecent treatment of a child under 16, and interfering with a corpse. In 2006 the man had admitted to police that he travelled the road from which Daniel disappeared on the same day of his disappearance, on his way to purchase marijuana from a drug dealer. The accused was subsequently named as 41-year-old Brett Peter Cowan (AKA Brett Peter Cohen).

Around this time, a white Mitsubishi Pajero was seized from a property on Russell Island. The vehicle was believed to have been involved in Daniel's abduction after a witness at the coronial inquest in April 2011 reported seeing a vehicle of similar description parked 100 metres north of the site where Daniel was last seen.

Daniel Morcombe - The Ongoing Investigation

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE AT SCHOOL

The death of Daniel Morcombe is one of the most extensively investigated crimes in Queensland's history.

As of 12 December 2008, a total reward of $1,000,000 ($250,000 from the Government and another $750,000 donated privately) had been offered. The privately donated portion of the reward expired at midnight on 31 May 2009. On this day, the Seven Network reported that a known paedophile (identified by the media as Douglas Jackway), who had been released from prison in 2003 - one month before Daniel's disappearance - could be of interest to the police.

By early 2009, the investigation had seemingly run out of leads, but in May a full-size clay model of the man believed to be involved in Daniel's abduction was placed at the spot where Daniel disappeared. Within a few days there were more than 300 tip-offs.

In June 2009, the Queensland Government came under criticism from Parliament over the release of Jackway from prison. One MP claimed the Supreme Court had presented clear evidence of his risk of reoffending. This publicity also prompted civil liberties groups to call for laws banning media outlets from naming people linked to criminal cases.

In July 2009, the parents of Daniel called for a coronial inquest in the hope of finding answers to their son's abduction and murder. The Morcombes said that after 5½ years, it was time for an inquest. Of particular interest to the family are several criminals who have told police they know who killed Morcombe and where his body was buried.

Daniel Morcombe - The Abduction

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

Daniel Morcombe or his full name, Daniel James Morcombe, was 13years-old when he went missing, on December 7th, 2003, few more days before his 14th Birthday. It is believed that Daniel was abducted from an unofficial bus stop under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass in the Woombye district of the Sunshine Coast approximately 2 km north of The Big Pineapple on Sunday, 7 December 2003. Daniel planned to catch the 1:35 pm bus to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre for a haircut and to buy Christmas presents for his family, but he failed to return.

Witnesses reported seeing Daniel at approximately 2:10 pm on the Nambour Connection Road under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass. The bus he was supposed to catch had broken down a few kilometres before his stop, and was behind schedule. When a replacement bus eventually arrived, Daniel hailed the bus, but it carried on without stopping, due to its delay and the fact that his stop was only an unofficial request stop. The driver of the bus radioed the depot for another bus to go and pick up Daniel. The bus driver and other witnesses later reported seeing a man standing a distance behind Daniel and another man slightly farther away at the time. When the second bus came a couple of minutes later, Daniel and the man had both gone.

A blue 1980s model sedan, possibly a Toyota Corolla, with yellow New South Wales license plates, is believed to be the car used by the abductor(s). Daniel owned a distinctive fob style pocket watch with "Dan" engraved on it, which has not been found
