Procedural Hearing Today for Morcombe Case

DANIEL JAMES MORCOMBE

The case of murdered Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe will return to a Brisbane court today for a directions hearing.

Brett Peter Cowan, 42, is facing several charges including murder and child stealing over the disappearance of Daniel Morcombe in 2003.

Morcombe family lawyer Peter Boyce says today's hearing before Chief Magistrate Brendan Butler will determine how many witnesses will give evidence at a committal hearing.

Mr Boyce says the Crown has agreed to 31 witnesses appearing but the defence team wants to hear from another 49.

"That's part of the process these days that if you can't agree on witnesses that ought to be called then you have to make an application to the court," Mr Boyce said.

"The court determines what witnesses will be called if any and the scope of their evidence so it's just a procedural issue really."

Mr Boyce hopes a date for a committal hearing will be set for next year.
